quick comment on portugues poetry…

January 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

when you can´t understand words whispered from a guy making goofy, scrunched eyebrow faces, how are you supposed to think its romantic?  i take it very lightly but it sure is amusing.

this is not a serious problem, just funny, and i thought you´d appreciate the observation:
i haven´t met a man who hasn´t tried to kiss me (in brazil).  i´m serious, almost.  it´s hilarious but also really annoying.  then they mope around for a couple days or try to convince you that you are their sun, moon, the air they breath etc etc…  i take it they experience rejection with every new wave of visitors that it doesn´t phase them much to be so blunt and then get shoved.
and they are young.  but its also a cultural difference.  relationships are very casual here.

well, regardless of the noble but ridiculous efforts of the locals, we made some great friends and i am sad to leave.  often i imagined a life there.  an easy life.
hm.

after breaking hearts in Lençóis we make our return to Salvador where we´ll spend carnival.  i think its going to get wild… i just want to put my sore feet up and sit by the ocean.  still got money troubles, in that i don´t have access to any.  um.  talk to me first if you´re going to travel and rely on atm machines.

ciao.

snake on my fork

January 26, 2007 · 3 Comments

snake dinnerfor our last night in Lençóis Lucas invited us to dine at his house.  we gathered some chairs on the sidewalk and street and shared a beautifully prepared plate of boa constrictor.  yes.
snake is not a typical meal for them, so we were flattered to be included in one they were so excited about.  the whole experience was awesome.  the street lighting, the smells, the language and communication, the open doors and curious children.  shadows cast on weathered stucco…  the intimate presentation of the meal:  one plate refilled, several forks, gathered chairs around a stool, passing the pimento hot sauce.
i thought it was funny how the women, Lucas´s grandma and mom sat silently in the door or leaned out the window of their house across the street the whole time.  either they weren´t interested in trying it or they don´t eat with the men.  ?
gathered there were Ba (lucas´s dad) Ba (dad´s twin brother) the chef neighbor who later filled us with homemade cachaça, Lucas and Lucas (jr.), andrea and i.
the snake tasted like what i remember tender stewed chicken to taste like.

following Ba´s lead i picked my teeth with it´s ribs.

where the brazilians go for vacation…

January 22, 2007 · 1 Comment

Lençóis is (supposed to be) a 6 hour bus ride from Salvador, located in the “interior” wooded landscapes of Brazil.  the town is now supported by tourism and treking but was first built to support the diamond miners in the area.  it was made into a national park and mining is not supposed to occur.  people still search for diamonds in the rivers but don´t destroy the land like they used to.  i´ve seen some of these natural diamonds before they are cut and they are AMAZING.  i would like to try to buy one before i go.

my feet are tattered and torn.  they are like beaten mules.  after a three day trek, i am just happy to not be on crutches.  i´ve compared my feet with a local friend here.  mine are sun burned on top, blistered, calloused and cracking.  it´s not a pretty site.  his are like slippers.  i don´t get it.  he scales rough rocky waterfalls barefoot better then i can walk in a straight line and his feet are soft like pillows.  i had expected they´d be more like shoe soles.  in general though, the people here are perfect images of physical health.  for a city with not much man made entertainment, there is an abundance of natural landforms.  and capaiera, which the kids start at a very young age.  we´ve been treated to some amazing performances.  the children are flashes of arms and legs, little ninjas.  and the adults are super human.  when they finish you realize your heart is beating because you haven´t taken a breath from the moment they flip or cartwheel into the ring.  they are double jointed and have a gymnast´s command of their muscles.

so our friend Dan acted as tourguide our first couple days here.  he worked in Lençóis for two months.  his friends took us in and have been treating us to the local fun.  the heat during the day necessitates trekking out to one of the nearby watering holes.  we get up, have an açai with granola and banana, trek out.  lay in the sun.  swim.  on the way back you might stop at a concession for a drink and game of dominoes.  at night you just walk around the loop.  there´s a well worn route through town where people just cruise all night, stopping here or there for a cachaça or simple sandwhich or tapioca crepe…  there´s no need to make plans with people cause you´ll run into them at some point.  and you all end up at the reggae bar.  then out to see the stars and overlook the city.

i wish i could include all the little details here.  everything that makes an impression on me.  we´ve laughed a lot and wondered a lot…  i don´t think of these things while i am sitting here at the computer, but they make me smile when i remember them.

on the trek andrea noted that if there were a contest for the strangest travel bag collection i would win it.  i travel with a banjo case full of clothing and banjo, a bike bag, a green sack that is supposed to be for a sleeping bag, a gym bag, and a tattered pick tote.  for the trek i had two bookbags stacked on top of each other and a sleeping roll sandwiched between the two.  eh.  travel with the banjo and gym bag primarily has been tough but there are times i really crave playing.  so it´s been worth it.

the other day andrea and i had a sit around and play banjo, practice Portuguese day.  i love learning another language.  my spanish is so-so.  my portuguese is so-so…  it´s just fun.  i will continue to work at it, but talking with people is really the best way.  we discovered that kids are fantastic teachers.  patient and they don´t act surprised if you don´t know something.  they just find a simple way to explain it.

got to hit the road.  i´ll be back.

oh, one quick thing.  our bank accounts were emptied by someone in Salvador.  not fun.  but we´re dealing.  my mom likes to point out that this is the 6th or so theft that we or someone we know has experienced.  she does this with a laugh.

ahhhh.   xo

lots of brazil…

January 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

bahian ewhoa, time is flying.

Brazil is truly a magical place.  we haven´t been relaxing on the beaches as i had planned but instead have been sucked into the energy and life that is pulsing on every corner we turn.  a quick explanation of our time in Rio de Janeiro…  sprinkling rain kept us from the beaches but we found dry moments to take in some live music at a famous but intimate, hole in the wall place called Bep Bep.  we took a train up to see the christ that looks over the city.  we had no interest in going out to the clubs in Copacabana but found that the Brazilian youth party in Lapa so we caught a bus and experienced some serious samba and bar hopping.  not to mention the lively ride there…  we were immediately taken in by the people around us.  they taught us samba (whoa), others showed us where to drink and which street vendors to eat at.  we were pulled into unfamiliar team games at a pool table.  met many friendly faces.  enjoyed watching the transvestites slinking around in gangs of hairspray and eyeshadow.  even witnessed a fellow hostellor get scammed by a drug dealer and a cop.  so we had some great times despite the dark cloud overhead.  eventually we were so bummed at waking to rain everyday that we threw in the towel and booked a bus to Salvador.

now Salvador is a funny place…  all big cities in brazil are dangerous.  but we were especially on our toes once in Salvador.

we got in at 1 in the morning after our bus was delayed 6 hours (total 34 hr ride) so we didn´t have a hostel and the streets were deserted and sketchy.  we got a cab and the hostel we ended up at was fantastic, Saõ Jorge.  no americans.  it was in the center of the historic city.  in the morning light, the area transformed into such amazing colors and character.  music everywhere.  cobblestone streets (which, uncomfortably, they used to call “black mans heads”) it all seemed amazing to us.  also i should mention that salvador was the center of the brazilian slave trade.  so the culture here is very influenced by the african roots.  andrea and i are like headlights in the nights.  it wasn´t till a bit later in the day we thought we´d roam.  our favorite thing to do.  but were stopped by locals when we went to turn out of the tourist area.  suddenly we realized how literally fenced in we were.  the historic center had been emptied out… the people actually removed, so that the buildings could be cleaned up and they turned it into a tourist attraction.  – that we were stuck in!

more in a bit…  we´re in Lençóis now (have been for a week) and are enjoying the quiet and familiarity of the people here.  made lots of friends with the help of a guy we met in Salvador.

today we´re going out to some (more) waterfalls.  there are dozens in the area.

caralho! feliz ano novo!

January 2, 2007 · 6 Comments

free champagne!i rung in 2007 on a sandy Copacabana beach with one friend and close to 2 million strangers.  damp from the drizzle, but not discouraged there was a lot of dancing, fireworks, champagne, fair food, resolutions, casting of flowers, a surprise Black Eyed Peas concert, and even a chilly dip in the ocean.  made wishes for you all to have luck in the new year.  (check out andrea´s photos of Rio)
