bikes, dog poo, pizza

September 26, 2006 · 9 Comments

i’ve put up some photos – check the flickr link to the right.

there are two computers at our hostel. we’ve been camping out here every morning to translate messages from potential apartment shares. we have a couple leads but have only seen one place so far. like many of the buildings downtown, it was a mansion that had seen better days. i love the character though and the balconies warm the place up. we’re going to keep looking.

mike is having a mate. we agree that it tastes horrible.
heheh… he’s trying to get back into it, having drunk a lot during college.

a couple quick notes so i don’t hog the computer anymore -

about my post heading:
we rode our bikes yesterday for the first time. while it was awesome to be riding again and to zip through the streets with wind in my hair, i quickly became aware of the dense car and bus exhaust. there are no emission standards here so there are really old vehicles spouting black clouds. i might actually start wearing a mask.
ps – it is pretty bizarre to see smoking indoors. apparently there was a law passed this year banning smoking in certain public spaces (theaters, schools, restaurants) but it is blatantly ignored.

dog poo is everywhere. just watch your step.
also of note is this cat park we ran into yesterday. the cats have somehow claimed corners of the parks. it looks like a little cat ghetto. i guess there are a few known places around town.

as i’ve mentioned, there are a lot of pizzerias and there seems to be little interest in any cuisine other than italian. a veggie pizza here consists of tomato and dried basil. i don’t know how Argentinians eat like they do and stay healthy… it’s red meat, cheese, bread, no veggies, and sweets full of dulce de leche. i’m looking forward to having a kitchen to cook for myself.
however, last night we met former co-worked/son of boss Cooper Jones for sushi at a place called “Business” in Recoleta. there was a giant camel-shaped disco ball. so, a disco camel. they played a video of VH1 divas concert three times while were there.
we discussed the abundance of PDA. “fredeliando”… (sp) and of public arguments that are precursors to the PDA. many families live in the city so it’s likely that young people live at home, so they go out to argue and make up. we’ve heard of tuvelos (sp) that are essentially sex rooms, like a cheap motel, that are pretty popular.
alright, gotta go. we’re being latched onto by our overzealous hostel manager.
xo – thanks for checking in on me… it’s nice to hear from you.

day two

September 23, 2006 · 3 Comments

just a quick post cause day two was a large improvement on day one and i should probably let you know…

i like this place.
Bs.As. (the most common abrv.) is on my good side. i did not find a coffee this morning, but i made do with nescafe till much later when i found a tall espresso. but i can handle that. i’ve got an open mind. for instance, we don’t flush toilets, all waste papers go in the trash. and i shower next to the toilet. my hostel is under renovation…

also, being vegetarian is less than exciting here. it’s not their strong suit… obviously. they put their parillos (grills) next to their churches. beef, religion and futbol. but i’m making due. tonight i had an asparagus, carrot, pineapple, palm heart on rye sandwhich. hm!
after walking the entire day i must say that the street-scape is awe inspiring. the conglomeration of architectural styles is chaotic but completely exciting to me. i’m taking lots of pictures and bought a notebook to start sketching in. you’ll have gaudi\horta organic iron work next to some massive brutalist concrete tower. plus, they have their own version of everything operational. i’m most impressed with the window shades. there are a lot of top rolling wood slat things. i like it. there are even some construction sites i’m going to keep an eye on.

it is still only dinner time (midnight) according to bs.as. time but mike and i just got back from the bar and are exhausted! so we’re still adjusting. hey, it’s only day two. tomorrow we explore palermo and sunday we’re looking at an apartment in san telmo.

buenos noches, xo

mike and i arrived in buenos aires this morning on very little sleep and in shock of the drastic life change. it was\is still feeling like a vacation. lots has happened though,
but in summary, it’s been a challenging day.

not speaking spanish is VERY much a bummer. we are working on that constantly, trying to say everything… and as we had heard, most people are very nice and warm. we did stand around at the airport for awhile without notice hoping someone would ask us what our problem was cause no one seemed to work there. mike’s bike didn’t make it to the airport. traveling with bikes is a real hassle. a lot of people ride here, which is nice and will be great once we have his bike, but it might have been better to get one here (though, we haven’t seen any bike shops)

this evening we explored the area’s pedestrian ways and found a bar to pour over our books and plans. buenos aires is different from any place i’ve ever been… the city architecture and surrounding landscape is very distinct. i will get my photos up soon. vertical towers of dirty concrete are the apartment buildings sitting amongst the shanty villas. that is on the outskirts. downtown, or in the micro centre where we’re staying, there is a main axis that mirrors DC, with an obelisk, the “pink house” and the capital. the carillos are pretty narrow and the old buildings with balconies create a canyon lined with pizzerias, entertainment, and shops.

the other setback was that our room at the hostel was broken into and one of my bags was taken. i didn’t loose anything too important, but it was a blow. an important lesson i guess.

i’m looking forward to a solid night’s rest and a great cup of coffee in the morning. we’ll get mikes bike and set out to find an apartment.

good night all. xo
